- Enter the first part of the day, for example 8:00 am – 10:00 am.
- Press Add split shift under that day and enter the second part, for example 12:00 pm – 4:45 pm.
- The day shows 6:45. Add a third part the same way if you have one.
The time between the parts is not counted as work. If your employer pays for some of it, add that time as another shift.
Split shift premium in California
In California, an employee whose schedule is split by unpaid, non-working time set by the employer (other than meal or rest breaks) may be owed a split shift premium: one hour’s pay at the state or local minimum wage. Anything you earn that day above the minimum wage counts toward it, so the higher your wage, the smaller the premium, and often there is none (California DIR, Split Shift). This calculator does not add the premium; check it with your employer if it applies to you.

Does a shift past midnight work?
Yes. A part that ends after midnight, like 10 pm – 2 am, counts on the day it started.
