Time card calculator with overtime
Enter your start and end times for the week. Several shifts in one day, shifts past midnight and unpaid breaks all count. You get total hours, overtime and gross pay.
Doing this every week? HoursOwed keeps every shift on your phone and adds up overtime as you go. With Pro, it sends any pay period to your manager as a PDF.
Try HoursOwedHow to use it
- Put in your hourly rate if you want to see pay. Hours work without it.
- For each day, enter when you started and finished. Worked 8–10 am and then 12–4:45 pm? Press Add split shift and enter both parts.
- Enter unpaid breaks in minutes, for example a 30-minute lunch.
- A shift that ends after midnight, like 10 pm – 6 am, is counted as 8 hours on the day it started.
How overtime is worked out
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees get at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek (U.S. Department of Labor). That is the default here: 40 hours, 1.5×.
Some states also count overtime by the day. In California it is 1.5× for hours over 8 in a workday and double time over 12 (California DIR). Turn on Daily overtime to count hours over 8 a day at 1.5× and hours over 12 a day at 2×. Hours already paid as daily overtime are not counted again toward the weekly 40. California’s seventh-consecutive-day rules are not calculated here.
Hours and minutes to decimal
Payroll forms often want decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. The calculator shows both.
| Minutes | Decimal | Minutes | Decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 0.08 | 35 | 0.58 |
| 10 | 0.17 | 40 | 0.67 |
| 15 | 0.25 | 45 | 0.75 |
| 20 | 0.33 | 50 | 0.83 |
| 25 | 0.42 | 55 | 0.92 |
| 30 | 0.50 | 60 | 1.00 |
Questions
Is this calculator free?
Yes, with no account and no limits. It saves your week in this browser so you can come back to it.
Does it round my time?
No. It counts exact minutes. If your employer rounds to the nearest 5 or 15 minutes, your paycheck can differ by a few minutes.
Is gross pay what I will get?
No. Gross pay is before taxes and deductions. It also assumes one hourly rate; bonuses and shift differentials change the overtime rate.
Can I use it for payroll?
It is an estimate to check your own hours, not legal or payroll advice. If the numbers do not match your paycheck, ask your employer or your state labor office.
