Speeding up a site on phones

A sample project: Tarnside Roofing is made up, the before and after sites are real

Same roofer, same content. Now the site works on a phone

I built this site with problems that are common on small business sites on purpose, then fixed it and measured both versions the same way. On a desktop it looked fine. On a phone it loaded slowly, the text was too small to read, the phone number was a line of text about 6 px high with no call button, and the contact form lost every inquiry.

Scroll down: the fixed version slides over the old one, and the numbers change as you watch.

What was fixed

How I measured it

I opened both versions in a browser the size of an iPhone screen, on a slow mobile connection with the processor slowed down like a budget phone. I loaded each version three times with an empty cache and show the middle result. I sent the form once to a test address, and the inquiry arrived. I run these same checks on a real site before I ever write to its owner.

Nothing was redesigned: same sections, pictures and font. The text got a little shorter, gray text got darker, and the buttons got one brand color.

For developers: exactly how it was measured

Both versions are served from one local server and opened in headless Chrome set to an iPhone screen size (390 × 844). The connection is slowed to 150 ms latency and 1.6 Mbit/s, and the processor to a quarter of its speed, so the numbers are closer to a phone on weak 4G than to a laptop on Wi-Fi. “Time until the main picture appears” is the browser’s Largest Contentful Paint. The form was sent once to a test endpoint on the same server, which recorded the enquiry; on a real site it would go to the owner’s inbox. The checks in the last row come from the same script I run on a real site before I write to its owner. Tarnside Roofing is invented; the pictures were drawn in code, and the phone number is from the range Ofcom keeps for fiction.

If your site needs the same

A short check first

A list of what's holding your site back on phones, each item with proof, like the table above. You decide what gets fixed.

Fixes, not a new site

Your text, pictures and look stay yours, whether you're on WordPress, Shopify, Tilda or plain HTML.

Measured again afterward

The same tests after the work, so you see the result in numbers.

A monthly check

Every month: the form still delivers, the site still loads fast, and nothing new has broken. From $30 a month.
